Small business: Too big to ignore?

There are over two million small businesses in Australia, accounting for roughly 96 per cent of all entities. But they are known as a silent majority, preferring to get on with running day-to-day operations rather than get involved in government lobbying or conducting focus groups.

However, a group called 'Too Big to Ignore' started a large-scale mobilisation campaign last week in Sydney to raise awareness of small businesses up until the Federal election in September.

The aim of Too Big to Ignore, according to its website, is to create a "highly visible, national campaign that enables small business to stand up and make a big noise". Currently, their supporter count stands at just under 8,000.

The grassroots movement is making significant use of social media and traditional advertising as campaign platforms, with a heavy presence on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+, as well as TV advertising and printed posters.
