Small business commissioner announced

Former Victorian Small Business Commissioner was yesterday announced as Australia's inaugural Small Business Commissioner.

Mr Brennan, whose appointment was welcomed by Small Business Minister Brendan O'Connor, was previously named the Council of Small Business of Australia (COSBOA) National Small Business Champion in 2011, as a result of his efforts in guiding and developing the role of the Commissioner in Victoria.

He previously worked as Executive Director of Small Business in the former Department of State Development, and as a barrister in private practice. He also owned and operated a small business, a law firm, for a number of years providing advice to government on legislative reviews and policy issues.

"Mr Brennan has had a distinguished career in both the private and public sectors. He is uniquely qualified, having served for seven years as the Victorian Small Business Commissioner, the first such position in any jurisdiction in Australia," Mr O'Connor said in a media statement.

Currently, Mr Brennan serves as the Chairman of the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation.
The role of Federal Small Business Commissioner involves providing advice to Australia's three million small businesses on issues that impact them, as well as work in consultation with the government and industry bodies to make sure that business concerns are addressed.

Some of the services provided will be referrals to business advisory and dispute resolution services.
"I don't want to be too prescriptive around the role of the Commissioner because it is an independent position and I want Mr Brennan to have the flexibility to make the role his own," Mr O'Connor said.

Mr Brennan is due to commence his new position in January.
